PFAS Blood Tests

Per- and Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS), such as PFOA and PFOS, are “forever chemicals” that resist natural breakdown in both our environment and our bodies. These chemicals are used to make products that resist heat, stains, oil, and water. They can be found in Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) firefighting products and a variety of consumer products. These include food packaging, carpet, clothes, cosmetics, cookware, and cleaning products. PFAS can also be found in your surrounding environment: soil, air, drinking water, and ground water. Exposure to PFAS linked to cancer, thyroid disease, immune suppression, elevated cholesterol, respiratory disease and decreased fertility

PFAS Blood Tests: What Analytical Information can I draw from this Test?

A PFAS blood test measures the levels of certain PFAS
chemicals in a person’s blood at the time of the test. The
results provide an indication of how much PFAS has entered
your body over time. You can compare your results to levels
found in other groups of people to determine whether your
levels are elevated. Results can also provide a baseline so
you can monitor changes over time, and they can support
actions by agencies to reduce community exposures.
Results can be shared with your doctor for consideration as
a risk factor for associated health outcomes and can inform
conversations about reducing PFAS exposure and
monitoring your health.

Chinchilla Life Sciences

U, C, & H Pettes

Chinchilla Life Sciences offers several options for safe and efficient blood dispensing. Our Pette series reduce the risk of exposure to biohazards by dispensing blood without having to open the primary sample tube. Our Tip Top caps offer a safer and easier alternative to pipetting from an open blood tube. Just carefully remove the stopper and replace the Tip Top.

Community Testing

Blood tests for PFAS are most useful when they are part of a scientific investigation or a health study. A scientific investigation can show the range of blood PFAS levels in community members and may provide information on how the levels vary among different populations. The data from these studies can also help community members who were not tested to estimate their likely blood PFAS level.

Individual Testing

If you are concerned and choose to have your blood tested, test results will tell you how much of each PFAS is in your blood, but it is unclear what the results mean in terms of possible health effects. The blood test will not provide information to pinpoint a health problem, nor will it provide information for treatment. The blood test results will not predict or rule out the development of future health problems related to a PFAS exposure.

In addition, blood testing for PFAS is not a routine test offered by most doctors or health departments. If you would like to have your or your children’s blood tested, talk to your health care provider. You can also seek guidance and how to interpret blood test results from your regional Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU). However, PEHSUs do not offer PFAS testing.

Remember that PFAS are found in the blood of humans and animals worldwide. Most people in the United States have one or more specific PFAS in their blood, especially PFOS and PFOA.
