Commonly used in molecular biology, biomedical, and pharmaceutical research, reporter gene assays are an invaluable tool for studying gene expression. Reporter genes, because of the visually identifiable characteristics they induce enable the detection or measurement of gene expression. When integrated into regulatory sequence or genes of interest, they can be used to report expression locations or levels. Reporter genes can also be used to measure signaling pathway activation and determine whether or not a certain gene has been taken up by or expressed in the cell.
